CREAMY POTATO SOUP WITH HAM

There’s nothing more comforting than a bowl of hearty, creamy ham and potato soup. All up it takes under 45 minutes (including prep time) to have a pot of full flavoured soup ready and on the table. Perfect for busy weeknights or for when you’re craving a hearty meal!

We use leftover glazed ham for our ham soup recipe with a chicken stock base. Flour and milk give us that mouth watering roux and deliciously thick and creamy consistency.

How To Make Ham and Potato Soup | cafedelites.com

HOW DO YOU MAKE HAM AND POTATO SOUP?

Ham and Potato Soup simmers away on the stove, pretty much taking care of itself, thickening into a delicious creamy base. There’s no stress involved — just have all of your veggies cut up before you start, a small glass of wine on your kitchen countertop, and get started!

Sauté onion, carrots and celery in butter. Also referred to as soffritto or mirepoix — the holy trinity of cooking. We start off with these three aromatics to build a wonderful flavour and depth to your soup.
Cook leftover ham along with potatoes in the soffritto to start drawing out the flavours in the ham.
Sauté the garlic for 30 seconds – 1 minute, which is enough time to release its flavour into the base of your soup.

EASY ROUX

Instead of making a roux (or white sauce) separately, we are going to do it all in the same pot. It’s much easier to do it this way in soups with no chance of messing up, and tastes better than using heavy cream in this ham and potato soup.

All you need to do is:

Mix flour through the veggies and ham in the pot and let it cook for 2 minutes to get rid of the ‘flour’ taste and brown it ever so slightly.
Stir in a low sodium chicken stock (you could also use beef) and bouillon powder.

Let the ham and potato soup thicken, then reduce the heat to medium-low before adding in your milk. Once your milk goes in, let it cook gently while stirring until it thickens.

Easier than a traditional roux.

SEASONINGS

Taste test your ham and potato soup first before seasoning with salt as ham has plenty of sodium.

HAM BROTH

You can make your own ham broth for ham soup using leftover ham bone:

  • Simmer the ham bone in a stock pot filled with enough water to cover the bone halfway (about 2 quarts/litres, depending on size of bone).
  • Bring to a boil, reduce heat, cover with a lid and let simmer until very fragrant (about 1 hour).
  • Discard hambone
  • Replace the chicken stock with your ham broth.

Either way, you’re in for a delicious treat with this ham and potato soup!

Prep: 15 mins
Cook: 25 mins
Total: 40 mins
Serves: people

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter (2 oz | 60 g)
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 1 cup large carrot peeled and diced
  • 1/2 cup diced celery
  • 3 cups peeled and diced potatoes
  • 4 cloves garlic minced or finely chopped
  • 1 1/2 cups cooked ham, diced (add more if desired)
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour (plain flour)
  • 2 cups low sodium chicken stock (or broth)
  • 2 teaspoons chicken Bouillon
  • 3 cups milk (whole milk or 2%)
  • 1 pinch of salt, if needed (adjust to you taste)
  • fresh cracked black pepper

Instructions

  • Heat the butter in a pot over medium heat. Sauté the onion, carrots, celery until beginning to soften (about 4 minutes).
  • Add the ham and potatoes, cook for 2 minutes, then add the garlic and sauté until fragrant (about 30 seconds).
  • Mix the flour through and cook for 2 minutes.
  • Stir in stock and bouillon, mixing all ingredients together. Increase heat and bring to a boil until potatoes are 'just' fork tender, about 10-12 minutes.
  • Reduce heat to medium-low, add the milk and stir over the heat until thickened (about 5 minutes).
  • Taste test and season with salt and pepper, if desired.
  • Serve warm.

Notes

TIPS

If your soup is too thick once it's finished, simply add more milk in 1/4 cup increments until reaching your desired consistency.
Alternatively, if your soup is not thick enough to your liking, mix 1 tablespoon of cornstarch together with 2 tablespoons of extra milk.
Pour the mixture into the soup and allow to boil for a few minutes to thicken, while stirring. Repeat for an even thicker soup!

This is the first time I have ever commented on any recipe I found online. My husband and I absolutely loved this recipe. I did add two extra ingredients, about a half a cup of fresh corn that I had cooked a few nights ago and some fresh thyme just before I added the milk. It turned out perfectly! Highly recommend this recipe and i’m going to keep it in my recipe box at home 🙂

Its been 24 hours and I got a txt msg from my son saying “can we eat this all week?” I picked up a spiral ham AGAIN, tomorrow will be an AFTER Thanksgiving feast then Tuesday ill be tripling the recipe so my husband and I can have more then a cup this time lol.
Thanks for an amazing recipe that we all love.

This ham and potato soup was even better than I imagined it would be! All the taste without the heavy cream, which (even as a creamed soup lover) I did not miss. I doubled the recipe and tossed in 1 tsp each of herbs de provence, parsley and basil. Rather than add the flour as the recipe calls for, I measued the flour into a jar, added broth and shook to mix before adding.

This soup is SUPER delicious, my husband is begging me to not lose this recipe (as I often do). Definitely make it!
I did make a few alterations (due to what I had on hand):
-reduced potatoes to 1.5 C (and .5 C were sweet potatoes)
-used skim milk (still turned out nice and creamy)
-added a can of Great Northern white beans (to make up for the lack of potatoes)
-added about 2 tsp of red pepper flakes
    -used red onion

I made this with only a few alterations. First, I skipped the carrots just because I didn’t feel like them.
Second, the other night I made ham, potatoes, and cabbage, so I was able to use the leftover broth from that instead of chicken broth.
Third, I was out of milk, so I used 1/2 and 1/2.
Result: Delicious. My wife was over the moon satisfied with this recipe.
    Simple, quick, tasty.

Best soup I’ve had in a long time!! Even my picky “that’s disgusting” preaching 8 year old loved it. My husband and I thought it tasted a bit like a clam chowder. Excellent!! Did this after Easter with leftover ham. Did the homemade bone broth then the soup and wanted to make sure I added my 5 star to the review. Thank you so much for the recipe!

Made this recipe tonight. It was delicious and so easy! I had an extra turnip from another recipe so I added that in with the potatoes. So good!

Someone had asked about the potatoes, I put them in raw and made sure to boil it long enough. They came out perfect.

I’ll be making this again for sure!

    Hello! Happy super bowl Sunday!
I just have to say I actually made this recipe because I had too much broth left over from my ham and bean soup and I felt so bad just to dump it. It worked out perfectly!? I also used up some extra leftover frozen ham from Thanksgiving and it’s sooo good. I didn’t mince my garlic I just smashed them and threw them in. Thank you for a great recipe, I’m going to have a lot of good soups to eat!

Made this last night, and it was great! Everyone went back for seconds. I ended up adding more stock in step four — two more cups for a quart total — in order to have enough liquid to cook the potatoes without everything sticking. But I was a bit random in how much of each solid ingredient I used, so it’s almost certainly my fault it was too thick.

In any case, this was a perfect way to use up some of that holiday ham!

This Christmas was a very bittersweet Christmas because this will most likely be my husband’s paternal grandmother AND his maternal grandfather’s last Christmas. So we drove in from az to California the night before Christmas Eve when my husband got off work and we surprised his maternal grandparents and made his grandmother so happy that both his grandmother and his mother (who knew about it) cried when his grandmother opened the door. We went to his paternal side of the family’s Christmas Eve party but his grandmother could not care less about seeing him. Then we spent Christmas Day with the maternal side of the family since he actually has a great relationship with that side of the family (even more so after his parents got divorced last year) and then after Christmas dinner, we left and drove all night and didn’t get home until around 530 am.

This was the first-ever Christmas alone for my husband and me. We have been married almost five years, and always spent all the holidays with extended family. This year we moved to the other side of the country for our jobs, and the original plan for his family to come visit fell through. We had a quiet but wonderful Christmas- we decided to only give each other one gift and instead to spend as much time together as possible. I made your lobster recipe (the advantage of only being two!)- it was incredibly easy and ridiculously delicious! Definitely going to be our go-to fancy dinner now.

I went to Pennsylvania with my family to meet my new grandniece. She was due December 6th but arrived instead on August 15th, weighing in at 1 pound, 3.6 ounces. Happily, she arrived home last Friday and now weighs over eight pounds! Almost as big as the ham we had for dinner! She is beautiful. And, I am looking forward to making the ham and potato soup recipe with the leftovers.

We typically celebrate Christmas early as one of our sons is a fire fighter and one of our daughters-in-law is a flight attendant. This year we managed to get all the family together on December 15th for food, fun and laughter. As a result Christmas day was spent quietly with my wife and I sharing a glazed ham and spending a quiet evening beside the fire.

Since I am a fairly recent widow, I spent Christmas morning with my sister and husband and my nephew and his girlfriend. In the afternoon, went to my son and daughter in law plus two of my grandchildren who are 6 and 5. So fun. Then on Boxing Day was a Christmas spent with all my 11 grandchldren, three step children and their spouses plus my son and daughter in law again. It was the best Christmas over two days that I have had since I lost my husband. Special memories were created those days for sure.

My seldest son arrived at around 8.30am and after breakfast and exchanging gifts he and my husband left to go on a walk while I put on the roast pork and turkey with stuffing. Once the food was ready I headed to the Nursing Home to have Christmas lunch with my brother and my mum who is in the latter stages of dementia. I was determined she wasn’t going to eat a puréed dinner and that she would enjoy a traditional, albeit finely diced, Christmas dinner. My husband & son joined us to wish my mum Merry Christmas. Mum enjoyed the turkey with pumpkin and sweet potatoes and gravy before polishing off some homemade Christmas cake. God love her! I love her to the moon & back. She has been the best mum & my best friend. My hubby, son & I then had the rest of the afternoon at home, it was a perfect day.

Our Christmas Day was a wonderful, relaxing eat-fest relaxing outside on the deck for breakfast, lunch and dinner with family coming by for each meal. The cicadas were thrumming away noisily in the trees in surging waves, with fabulous calm in the pauses with a gently north-easterly blowing. A really Australian Christmas Day – not too hot, a bit noisy at times, plenty to eat and drink, and family. Lovely!

My sister passed away due to a car accident on the 12th of this month so I flew to Missouri for her funeral. I got to visit with all my family while there and that was nice since we don’t see each other often. Unfortunately, I became ill when I got home, so Christmas was spent quietly at home, with my feet up, the moisturizer with Vicks running and a box of tissues nearby. My daughter, her husband and two of my adult grandchildren were here on Christmas eve, so we opened gifts then. Another of my granddaughters and family went to Florida for Christmas and won’t be home until the 30th. We’re supposed to have another Christmas then and since her son is only 5 , I’m thankful they weren’t here. I am still not up to par, but I’m sure I’ll be okay by then. This is the quietest Christmas I’ve ever had. I usually have a houseful and do most of the cooking. That was canceled for this year since I didn’t want anyone else to become ill. Wishing everyone out there a happy and healthy holiday season. May God keep you safe.

We had the best Christmas morning. It was our turn for a BBQ brunch with both my family & my husbands family. We had 25 people around the table. Lots of laughs and love. So much fun with kids in the pool, adults relaxing and laughing, finishing it off with great food. I love receiving my emails from Cafe Delites and as a Coeliac, the recipes are easy to convert should I need too. Thank you for the wonderful recipes. Merry Christmas & a wonderful prosperous New Year to all. ❤️

I traveled over the river and thru the woods about 7 hours north of Chicago to be with my parents. I made the Christmas dinner for my mom and also cleaned up afterwards. When I come home my gift to my family is cooking for the entire week. My parents are in their 70’s and I don’t get to see them as often as I’d like.

Thank you for them, it made my menu planing so much easier :-). I spent Christmas this year with my Husband and our 3 Sons and their Families – 3 Grandsons(ages 15, 4, 2)!! A tradition that’s only done every other year. So this year Christmas was Extra Special and Meaningful to both my Husband and and I. We had our traditional antipasto, then lasagna, mb’s, sausage and beef rib bones, garlic bread. Then for desert, cookies we all baked. I love this time of year!!!!

Spent Christmas morning with my son, daughter and two grandchildren watching them open gifts from Santa and then exchanging the gifts under the tree. Then we all went over to my mother’s house where we joined over 30 family members for a wonderful Christmas brunch and some games as well as a White Elephant gift exchange. Finished the day with my other son and his family coming over to open gifts at my house. Was a fun, exhausting and somewhat chaotic day but I loved every minute!

This was our first Christmas to wake up as empty-nesters. It was a little weird not having the kids around but we enjoyed breakfast together and cooked the ham to bring to our daughters house. Her husband planned a Christmas Olympics where we played five games like the candy cane toss, popping balloons with winter gloves on and sucking up m&m’s with a straws. We received points to see who would be the Christmas champion, I came in third. We ended our night by roasting marshmallows over a camp fire in the backyard. It was a wonderful day!

I spent my Christmas recovering from 2 hours of singing ending at Mid-Night, then after a well deserved sleep (and walking the dogs) I made cinnamon rolls, then put the ham in to cook. I have one Son who hates cooked veggies so I got a veggie tray for us all to graze, them with dinner rolls and whipped potatoes we set down to eat and they both enjoyed everything.

Spent Christmas day with most of my family and lots of extended family. Cooked a big meal (this is the only holiday we spend in our home and I get to cook for). Got up, prepared most of my meal, opened gifts with my husband and kids, attended Mass together as a family, came home, finished preparing the meal, waited for everyone to arrive, had lots of visiting and playing card games all day. Finally got the house cleared around 1030 last night. All in all a wonderful holiday with my family.

We spent Christmas eating cinnamon rolls for breakfast, opening presents, playing with presents (new toys), and cuddling up and watching movies. It was raining pretty hard all day, so we stayed indoors. We also enjoyed home made gluten free sugar cookies which were made the previous evening and decorated by my son, who is 10. Of course he left a really big cookie out for Santa, with a cup of milk. My son said, “next year, we should also leave out some carrots for the reindeer!” Indeed, we should, now, who will remember in 364 days? Oh, the magical thinking of our children, it definitely brings joy and happiness.

I probably can’t enter since I’m in Australia and I’m probably too late too but I am pinning this to my ham recipes board since it looks amazing. lol.. yes I have one because every Christmas we buy a whole big leg of ham and over my dead body I’m not keeping the bone and the smoky skin to make stock then soup with it even if it’s tropical here in Queensland. Yes I’m a soupaholic! I always freeze some of the ham diced for other things too. It’s a cheap and good thing to buy if you use it all.

Christmas Day was a quiet one this year – just my hubby & I. Quiet but still enjoyable. Upon waking we made a Bailey’s coffee (yum), opened our gifts from family and FaceTimed. It’s not the same as in person but not bad. We then went for a nice walk along the boardwalk. Coming home to curl up and watch the Grinch movie because it isn’t Christmas without those little Whos singing their hearts out.
I spent very little time in the kitchen, as we decided to eat leftover appys from a get together on Christmas Eve. Sitting in front of the fireplace, we sipped our wine and feasted on leftovers, feeling quite content and at peace.

My grandmother past away on Christmas Day 4 years ago and Christmas was her thing. She said it was the only time of year that everyone could relax and enjoy the time together without grudges. She was right. Our Christmas starts a week before with decorations and food prep. Our Christmas Eve get together is a tease for the Christmas Day Feast which everyone comes together for. There are plenty of gifts and party games to promote warm fuzzies all round. We have the most amazing time together as we eat drink and be merry. Our food is nothing less than a banquet with a mix of tradition, a blend of culture and plenty of fresh seafood. The sweets are over the top taste sensations and a banquet in their own right. I love Christmas and Nan would be proud as she is included on a little table with a photo and candle that burns throughout the celebration.

I used country sausage and a blend of diced peppers as well as zucchini. We followed that with prime rib for dinner which turned out perfect! Love your recipes. Have tried many of them. My 89 year old father fell and fractured his leg a few weeks before Christmas so we were able to bring him home for the day from the rehab center so he could enjoy some fabulous food! Along with cooking that we baked cookies, listened to the great Charlie Brown Christmas music, watched “Elf”, took a long walk with our sweet little dog and saw deer, beautiful birds, a raccoon, and a huge alligator sunning himself (we’re in Florida!). Then after dinner we went to the cinema and say the new Mary Poppins movie. A wonderful day!

Christmas in Tuross Head Australia – 14 friends who, like us, are retired with children and families living long distances away. Lots of fun with secret Santa gifts and a feast of food with everyone contributing. No hot soup for us on a very hot Australian day – I made a double serving of your Lime Chicken salad with Mango Avocado Salsa – a great hit. (Still had baked ham, turkey, prawns, oysters but with salads instead of hot vegetables). Finished with a musical jam session and lots of desserts – not that we needed them.

Belated Merry Christmas and best wishes for the New Year.

Christmas was busy but a wonderful day! I went to my bfs parent for breakfast. It was a lovely time with family. Everyone brought their dogs over as well which made it even more fun as we got to spend time with all of our fur babies as well! The second stop was dinner at my best friends house. She and I usually try recipies that we find together so we made dinner and baked up a storm for her kids and family. The night ended with quality time between my bf and I. Just relaxing and watching a movie. As I mentioned, busy! But so worth it seeing everyone and spending quality time together before we have to go back to work!

Hope everyone is having wonderful holidays with their families and loved ones!

Christmas ended up being a solo event this year. Mom wasn’t feeling well and I couldn’t kennel the dogs over Christmas so we celebrated early and had my aunts over for snacks. Actual Christmas day I watched The Holiday and made fettuccine.

This Christmas was a little different that usual. We celebrated with both sides of the family the weekend before Christmas. That left Christmas Eve and Christmas Day for just my husband and myself. It really was quite lovely. We opened our gifts to each other on Christmas Eve and had a nice dinner of ham and bean soup (ham from Saturday) and Tiramisu poke cake (left over from Sunday). Christmas Day we went to a movie and a light dinner. We decided in the end, that it didn’t really matter what day you celebrate with family and friends, as long as you are all together to celebrate.

Spent the weekend before Christmas having our family celebration. We had 25 people and 11 dogs at our house from Friday to Monday. We had a large dinner on Saturday evening using two recipes I have from this blog (well received and will make again). We spent Christmas Eve at a close family friends house having dinner and playing a gift exchange game. My intent is to make this recipe with the leftover ham I have from our Christmas dinner, I cannot wait because I love soups in the cold weather.

Christmas celebrations always start Christmas Eve late afternoon having an rarly dinner with my mom’s brothers and sisters d family. Christmas mor ing is spent at my home opening gifts with my boyfriend. Then we both go to my oarents home where we always enjoy orange danish tolls. We open gifts and stockings. Usually we feel a tad rushed beause we need to prepare some side dinner items to take to my dad’s family. Where 4 generations gather and eat, sing Chrisymas carols, read the Christmas story, open girts, and enjoy each other’s company. This has been tradition every year for all my life, and i wouldn’t want it any other way! I love to find some great cafedelites recipes to share with my family during the holidays.

We spent our holiday at home eating and enjoying each others company. We have a tradition of fixing a country ham breakfast after opening our presents. Then later in the evening we had a beef tenderloin dinner. For dessert of course we had leftover cookies and fudge. It was a great day spent with family and remembering and talking to family not able to be with us. I enjoyed the recipe for beef tenderloin on this website but did not make a sauce.

This Christmas was especially difficult as my husband very unexpectedly passed a few weeks ago. We had all of the family here; had grilled prime rib; fresh cranberry -pear salad and wrapped fig baked Brie. We are a blended family; 2 sons a daughter and their families so always a full house I was determined to keep our tradition of last house on their list for dinner and presents. Dinner was great; kids got presents from grandpa that he’d picked out; and the house was very full of his love.

When I was a young mother, I always wanted to spend my Christmas at hone with my husband and two daughters. However, that was not to be because is was a time when my husband insisted we go “home” to spend with his maternal family…….and so we would end up driving hours to visit his mother and sisters, and squeeze in some time with my mother. Since my girls are now grown with families of their own, I go out of my way to not cause them the same stress. I ask if they want me to come over, and if so when…..and I go, watch my grandchildren open their presents, and then I leave. I think spending time with your own family is so important, especially on a holiday like Christmas. This year I took the fabulous Egg and Sausage Casserole from the Cafe Delites repertoire of recipes to my youngest daughter’s house (it was delicious!). In mid-afternoon I visited my oldest daughter’s home and had fun watching my four grandchildren open their presents. I love not being stressed, and the short visits are just enough to fill my heart with Christmas happiness!

We didn’t have Christmas plans until later in the day, so we invited friends over kind of last minute when we found out they didn’t have plans either. We had ham and scalloped potatoes, she brought a tossed salad and berry pie. I love having spontaneous friends.

Your prime-rib recipe yesterday brought back a flood of memories… Traditions become ingrained… and Christmas Dinner is the prime example of this for me. Every year since 1982 my Christmas Eve offering was baked stuffed shrimp and appropriate side dishes BUT… Christmas Day always found a luscious “Roast Beast” centered on my table. After the first year I secretly tucked away at least $20 every month toward this traditional dinner. Since that first year there have been very good as well as bad years and the size and number of gifts has varied BUT… always there has been “The Dinner”. For “The Dinner” was the best gift of all… The warmth of sharing a special meal with those you hold dear forever in your heart. Having never had children somehow I knew that the seats at my table would never grow and over the years the number of family and friends has sadly declined. Having lost my “Significant Other” 8 weeks ago… this year my “Roast Beast” was a rib eye steak and my chair was the only seat at the table BUT… some traditions never die.

Our Christmas celebration began on Sunday at our son’s house. Breakfast brunch included baked hash brown casserole and French toast casserole. Christmas eve was our day to put on the feed. We had spaghetti with anchovy and marinara sauce, calamari in red sauce, baked ham, baked fish, parsley potatoes and green bean almondine. All homemade, no shortcuts here. Christmas day began with breakfast at our daughter’s home. Along with the traditional foods, I was asked to make my almost-famous buttermilk pancakes. The day was finished at our house once again for dinner that included homemade stuffed shells among other foods.
We are blessed that our children live close enough to gather this often and look forward to this special time of year.

Merry Christmas ?. As a family of five we spend Christmas at home in Connecticut. We all decorate together, we all bake and decorate cookies together. I try my very best to fill the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas with as much as I can. I want my kids to have memories that mean more than the gifts they most certainly forget when they are older. Happy Holidays to all.

We were woken up bright and early on Christmas morning by our youngest, letting us know that ‘Santa drank his milk’, then we opened presents, played games and visited with family and friends to give out cookies, which we do each year. This soup looks amazing and I’ll definitely be trying it, as we have so much leftover ham.

We had a wonderful Christmas but we celebrated it on Saturday because I worked both Christmas Eve and Christmas. So our celebration came early with dinner, opening presents and then game night. It was great fun. Christmas Eve we then went to church service at 1700 with the grandparents. Had dinner afterwards with them and the cousins, aunt and uncle. Opened gifts and then I had to run in to work. Still we had time for the things that were important – faith, family and food!!

      And love this soup recipe.

Unfortunately the evening ended early when my nephew had a meltdown and my sister’s family left early and then my brothers left shortly, but they had a hour and a half drive. We still spent 4 hours together and very much enjoyed that time.

We ate so much we had to skip the planned scallops in butter sauce and rice, cheese and salad, and went straight to dessert and coffee. At midnight we exchanged gifts and went to bed satisfied. And then we were invited to Christmas Dinner with friends out in Gold Canyon. Just a perfect day and the best delicious Crockpot ham with all delicious sides. Now that Christmas day is over the festivities are still happening here we are planning to have about 40 friends here Saturday for dinner. In these parts of the country there is a traditional dish that is made for holidays Southern Maryland Stuffed Ham, it is made with a corned ham the stuffing consists of chopped kale, collards and spices. Adding this to potato soup transforms the soup into delicious meal to enjoy on those cold winter nights. We will be having stuffed ham on our menu for Saturday evening along with other traditional dishes.

We spent Christmas at home with my wife’s family. Creamy Parmesan Chicken on Christmas Eve, from this site, of course. Then my brother-in-law and I cooked the big turkey Christmas Day. We managed not to ruin it too! Good country walk todayand we’ll be having the Cafe Delites white turkey chili tonight.

Love ham and potato soup! Defiantely going to try this with all the left over potatoes and ham! For our holiday we do a little different than most. We cook something called “the beast”, which is roasted beef tenderloin with red wine adju. This year was my first year doing it in my home, since i wanted to make my new husband and my first christmas together awsome. Was i intemidated by the beast? Sure was, but it turned out a smashing hit with the help of grandma and the family Recipie! Here’s hoping for many more sucessful kitchen adventures with my new family and old! – ^_^

On Xmas day I was able to use my walker to wheel myself to the living room and watched in delight as my kids opened their presents. So blessed to be able to be here to share those family memories. Christmas at our house is two-fold: Christmas Eve our daughter & her boyfriend + our granddaughter & Gerald’s 2 boys came to our house – we ate turkey, jalapeno poppers, smokies, meatballs, deviled eggs, cream puffs, & Christmas cookies while watching The Christmas Chronicles. Then we unraveled a saran ball before we dug into presents. Christmas Day we planned to stay home & do a jigsaw puzzle, but instead we went to Gerald’s house, had a ham dinner, & watched the 2 older grands (13, & 14) ride their motocross racing bikes and our granddaughter performed stunts on her pit bike trying to scare her grandma, which she did when she ALMOST wiped out!

Christmas was great for my family this year. I spent my last Christmas with my family from Mississippi, and enjoyed several of their southern traditional recipes. The best part was watching the kids rip open their gift and hearing them give thanks to Santa. Overall, it was amazing considering i’ll be shipping off next year for the Air Force.

I spent Christmas with my boyfriend and his grandparents quiet and relaxing. We ate turkey wings with gravy, lemon pepper and barbeque chicken, stuffing, green bean casserole, broccoli casserole, corn, pasta salad, mac n cheese, chocolate cake, sock it to me cake, sweet potatoes and glazed carrots. Then I went to see my godchildren and delivered their presents. I got to do a lot of reflecting and being thankful for God and all he has done for me and my family this year.

I will definitely need some creamy comfort later this week, and this soup looks like a winner (I will be using chicken, though, since I only eat chicken and turkey as far as meat goes.) This year, again, I found myself looking forward to Christmas for months, then feeling kinda relieved when it was over and I got home from my Dad’s with the dogs. He is not the easiest person to get along with (and, he certainly hasn’t gotten any easier since he turned 80) and I think 48 hours straight is enough for both of us. So, I am just chilling here with my laptop, browsing recipe ideas online. 🙂

Opened presents in the morning, then while the hubby played a few rounds of golf, I brought our neighbors Christmas cookies. For dinner we had a lovely pork tenderloin with apples and onions and a mustard-honey glaze along with a tossed salad full of a yummy vatiety of vegetabled. I had time in the evening to quietly reflect on things and have my private thought-conversations with my parents who have both passed on. This will be the recipe I will be making this weekend. Unfortunately, Christmas did not turn out the way I thought it was. It started off with our traditional gift exchange around the tree but the laughter, love, and memories, never took place…. I spent the remainder of my Christmas Day crying and feeling isolated from my family. So much has happened in me and my daughter life in 2018. I lost my apartment back in November, and we had to move back in with my mother. I’m blessed and appreciative that we have a place to stay, but at this point I have regret and just wish I still had my own place…. Worst feeling ever is to be somewhere and feel unwanted and bullied and that’s what yesterday and the days before have felt like… Praying for better days.

For the first year, My siblings and I went our kids are all in town. My mother’s birthday is the day before Christmas Eve, so we had a pizza and wine night and wrapped presents. On Christmas Eve we all got together for a big dinner and exchange gifts for the kids and did a white elephant gift exchange for the adults which was very funny. Christmas Day we all woke up and made our way back to my parents whenever we could after visiting other family and Had our one last day to get there before everyone returns back home.It was nice to have all of the family together especially to see how big and everyone’s kids have grown.

Christmas with my family was the best this year since my daughter came visiting from Malta she had such a bad experience, her husband had double myloma, then after that he needed hip replacement it was such a traumatic time for all. Just seeing everyone at the table eating and enjoying themselves opening presents surrounded my my eight grandsons was the best thing!

We hosted my in-laws and that side of the family Christmas morning. In the afternoon we went to my aunts, a much larger side of the family. My kids favorite part was the visit from santa that happens ever year – but this year there was a surprise appearance from the Grinch which made it extra special for the little ones!

We spent our day by first visiting our 2 daughters and their children. Then we went to my sister-in-laws house for lunch with my husbands’s family. Normally we’d spend the evening with my mother and my family, however she passed away earlier this year. The evening was spent with my husband, daughters, grandchildren, and son-in-law. Good times, good memories, and fun watching the kids open gifts. Today we’ll spend family time with my brother and his family. Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy, New Year to everyone!!

Love receiving your newletter: the intro. the photos, easy to following directions, nutritional info…every recipe has it all. Best part is that I have never prepared one of your recipes that hasnn’t turned out great. We celebrated Christmas Eve with our son and daughter and her significant other. Enjoyed each other’s company and a great ham dinner with au gratin potatoes, garlicky peppered corn, Italian seasoned artichokes, sugar cookies, chocolate chip, thumbprints with apricot jam and my friend’s Italian pastry made with homemade concord grape/orange/nut filling. Accompanied with rum spiked egg nog, Ubons bloody mary’s, moscow mules. We had a wonderful time together, opened presents and watched Christmas Story. Merry Christmas Happy Holidays to you and yours and a Happy New Year filled with health & happiness. P.S. MY HAM BONE FROM CHRISTMAS EVE is going to be great in one of your ham soup recipes!

We moved to Florida and have no family here and haven’t made many friends . The neighbor was having 24 friends over for Christmas dinner. We were invited at the last minute when they found out we would be alone. It was amazing how people welcomed us in and made us feel special. Wow! Even the prayer from the hostess before the meal thanked everyone for coming and said “you are my family, not just my friends and I can’t think of any other way to spend this special day”. This small gesture will be remembered by us forever, and we plan to pay it forward. We now have extended family in Florida. We are blessed.

I work at a state hospital, so I worked 3rd shift. Went home, drank a hot tea, checked on my sleeping kids, then had a VERY SHORT nap. Got up, hugged my boys, had a few coffees, then loaded up the car with food and gifts, and we went to my parents’ house. There we had gifts, then fixed snack-type food platters; we had a lovely little meal, then hauled all of our gifts home. I went to bed early; left my boys up & wearing their new pajamas, setting up & using their new stuff! We will have a real cooked Holiday meal at my parents’ house on Saturday, when I’ve had a few nights off, & can spend the day there, helping my Mum cook yummy things!

Our daughter and granddaughter came over from Canada to celebrate my mothers 90th birthday December 23rd with the rest of the family. So Christmas was at my house for the first time in 5 years. It was great having all the fsmily together again, everyone had a lovely time opening gifts and eating everything that is good and bad for us.

We spent Christmas with our daughters and their families. We had scalloped potatoes, creamed cucumbers, goulash, fresh-baked rolls, green bean casserole and plenty of desserts. We talked about what is the true meaning of Christmas and had fun just visiting and playing cards. I plan on making the ham and potato soup for New Year’s day. Not sure what you mean by website.

Spent the Christmas holiday in France staying with relatives, memorable walks in the crisp fresh air of the French countryside alongside grape vines. Returning home for a fantastic Christmas log from the local boulangerie and some Champagne

…I enjoy the recipes that are posted; and always look forward to receiving the emails. My husband and I spent a quiet Christmas together after visiting with my in-laws. Our daughter is,away at school and was unable to make it home for the holidays. Thank goodness for Skype! Hope you enjoyed Christmas and that Santa was kind 🙂

We spent Christmas at my mother’s house. We had Italian sausage and chicken lasagna, ham, broccoli, carrot pineapple raisin salad, homemat garlic rolls, plain and pineapple pound cake and homemade cookies. My mom does most of the cooking. She is 70 so someone will have to start making everything. I will have to be the one since I am the oldest. I will be referring to your website for recipes. Thank you for this website. I enjoy cooking the recipes. Happy New Year

Attended the last mass of Simbang Gabi (pre-Christmas novena, night mass). During the Christmas eve, we shared the delicious arroz caldo (chicken congee) with tofu & pork on the side. Perfect match…

Spent Christmas all alone, just the way I like it. No fuss, quiet and peaceful and watched cooking shows all day.

    What a delightful dish!
After glazing a ham Christmas Eve, we have a bit left over, and this is the perfect way to enjoy it. We had a lovely time celebrating Christmas as a family, and send you our very best wishes for the rest of 2018!

I spent Christmas with my parents and sister at my house. My mother cooked a lot of food and it was so good. We watched all the basketball games.

Hello. I spent my Christmas with my family. Unwrapping gifts, struggling to put toys together, pigging out on recipes from your website, watching Christmas movies. Hope you had a wonderful Christmas.

Three families have celebrated Christmas together for over twenty years, stuck together through thick and thin. My contribution this year to Christmas was a pavlova Christmas wreath from your website.

My husband and I celebrated with our son who lives with us and he had our grandson 20 and granddaughter 13 come over for lunch and to open presents. Our real treat this year was have our older son and grandson who just moved here to Tx. to also share in opening gifts and lunch . This was a very happy reunion for all of us since we all hadn’t seen our oldest son and grandson in 7 yrs.
